1. The Joint Brigade Selection Board for SY 2017-2018 will be held at JROTC Headquarters on Wednesday 10 MAY 17. This Board will select the Joint Cadet Brigade Commander, XO, Senior NCOIC and the Joint Staff.
2. The continued success of our JROTC Program significantly hinges on the quality of OUR Cadet Joint Brigade Staff. They represent the entire SDUSD Cadet Corps when they meet or communicate with educators, community leaders and other students. Their appearance, professionalism and conduct are a direct reflection of our program and we need to ensure that we continue to be represented by our best and brightest cadets. I encourage top cadets to consider serving in the District Joint Brigade Staff. I commend this year’s staff as they raised the bar to a higher level in the areas of leadership, innovation and unit communication. We need to continue to put forth dedicated cadets with these excellent academic and personal achievements to further demonstrate the quality of program.
3. Submit a completed SDUSD-Form 43 (attached) to 1SG Olson NLT 26 APR 17.
4. Once all nominations have been submitted, an interview schedule with detailed instructions will be produced and disseminated NLT 3 MAY 17.

On March 18th, hundreds of cadets from thirteen different schools from our JROTC 8th Brigade came together at the annual Cadet Ball which took place in the grand ballroom of the Town and Country Resort. The event started off with the Color Guard’s Presentation of Colors. Next, a full course dinner was served to all of the attendants, as the program director for the west coast’s Army JROTC schools spoke as the guest speaker. Afterward, the elected members of the Royal Court from each school were presented along with the Honor Guard’s Arch of Swords. Finally, cadets celebrated and ended the night with dancing. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped with the event and we hope you all had a great time!

On February 14th, our Academic Team competed in this year’s JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl (JLAB). Through much time, effort, and determination, they placed as one of the top twenty schools on the western side of the United States. We would like to congratulate them on their academic excellence and success on traveling to our nation’s capital, Washington D.C., to compete in the final round. Please congratulate the following cadets on their academic superiority over hundreds of schools in America: Brandon Bavongkhoun, Jacob Franco, Krista Peterson, Christina Tran, and Lesley Warner.

Below is the schedule for this year's Cadet Ball:
At 1630, the Color Guard, Honor Guard, and cadets participating in the Arches will arrive for rehearsal.
At 1730, check in begins for everyone.
At 1815, the ballroom opens to everyone.
At 1830, everyone must be checked in before this time.
YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO ENTER INTO THE BALL PAST 1830 (6:00 PM).
At 1900, the Presentation of the Colors will start.
At 1915 - 2030, dinner will begin along with a guest speaker.
At 2030, the formation of the Royal Court will start.
At 2045, the presentation of the Royal Court will commence.
From 2100 - 2330, dancing will begin.
DANCING MUST BE APPROPRIATE, OTHERWISE YOU WILL BE FORCED TO LEAVE THE PREMISES.
*PLEASE LET YOUR RIDES KNOW THAT CADET BALL WILL END AT 2330 (11:30 PM).
On March 9th, a representative from the 8th Brigade came to evaluate our unit. This involved reviewing our cadet portfolios, interviews, and several of our cadets, including the battalion staff giving a briefing on our service learning project and continuous improvement project. We would like the congratulate the cadets involved as we were given a very high score of 99.03% and therefore awarded the gold star which our Kearny cadets will now be wearing on the uniforms.

Four Star Leadership with General Tommy Franks is accepting applications and nominations for its world-class summer leadership program to be held July 9-14. The General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum, in conjunction with Oklahoma Christian University, offers this special opportunity to 70 of the top performing high school students from around the world, free of charge.
Students will be housed on the OC campus in Edmond, Oklahoma, where they will meet and engage with national and international leaders including elected officials, dignitaries and championship-level athletes and travel on various program related excursions. In addition, students will be confronted with practical leadership and ethical scenarios and then challenged to address them individually in a persuasive speech and writing competition as well as collaboratively in an Ethics Bowl competition.
“Four Star Leadership is a one-of-a-kind program that provides selected high school students invaluable leadership lessons through team-building exercises, spontaneous problem solving as well as coaching in persuasive speaking and writing,” said Franks. “The 2017 Four Star Leadership program is shaping up to be the most impactful yet and is sure to provide life-changing experiences to all attendees.”
Program curriculum is designed around the four core principles of the four stars of leadership: character, common vision, communication and caring.
Attendees will have a chance to earn more than $15,000 in scholarships, learn life-changing lessons and receive endorsements and recommendations to future positions of leadership.
Applications and nominations for Four Star Leadership 2017 are being accepted now through May 8.
On March 4th, our Raider Team competed in this year’s Cadet Challenge at Hoover High School. The Cadet Challenge is a competition against schools within the brigade consisting of push ups, sit ups, basketball tosses, and the relay race. Although we did not bring back the trophy, we would still like to congratulate all our cadets who participated in this event for all of their hard work.
